Son Parc is an attractive urbanisation
on Menorca's beautiful north coast. It has its own lovely

Environmental considerations
In 1993 UNESCO declared the island of Menorca a Biosphere Reserve. This declaration has been conferred on 393 places on the
planet where there exists an important natural and cultural heritage and where people
have accepted an economic development compatible with the conservation of
nature. A reserve of biosphere is a commitment between man and his natural
surroundings.
The declaration of Biosphere Reserve compels the people of
Menorca to take measures to prevent their heritage changing or deteriorating.
The responsibility does not just fall on the Menorcaian
shoulders; whilst you are on holiday at “Casa
KaySha” there are some areas in which you can help them to achieve their
goals: save water and energy; respect the environment; take responsibility for
your litter and waste and get to know their natural and cultural heritage. That
way the fate of Ibiza will not fall on

Bird Watching Holidays in
Menorca is one of the most impressive areas for bird
watching in the entire Mediterranean. There are more than 25 species of birds
of prey and more than 700 breeding pairs on the island. That's far more than
any other Mediterranean system. The reasons are the wide variety of ecosystems
concentrated in a small area, the well preserved countryside and the abundance
of prey. The following link provides data on the abundance of birdlife in the
region:
http://www.bsc-eoc.org/avibase/avibase.jsp?pg=checklist®ion=ESBA
In addition the whole of Menorca has been declared as a
'Reserve of the Biosphere' for its surprising bird population and its
prehistoric monuments, some of which date back 4000 years. The island is rich in bird and plant life making it an
ideal location for bird watching or rambling along many of the coastal
footpaths. Menorca has many rough tracks which are the only access to quiet and
remote spots - ideal for exploration by foot or mountain bike and of course
ideal for bird watching.
Links to typical “trip reports”:
http://www.surfbirds.com/mb/trips/menorca-dw-0303.html
Indeed the small
Balearic island of Menorca makes an ideal place for a relaxed getaway. Boasting
a superb array of flowers, and holding a good selection of typical
Mediterranean birds, from gaudy Woodchat Shrikes and Hoopoes to subtler
Short-toed Larks and Tawny Pipits, it also makes an excellent place in which to
catch the full magic of a Mediterranean spring. With the island only around
thirty miles long, you can reach every part of it quite easily, and yet there
is plenty to explore in a week or longer.
Despite its size Menorca boasts a
surprisingly good range of habitats, with rocky coasts, delightful coves with small
beaches, offshore islets, traditional pastureland, woods, dunes, freshwater
marshes and those delightful thyme-and-lavender scented Mediterranean
hillsides, cut with steep-sided gorges. It has a landscape of green rolling
hills and farmland, much of which is given over to grass and cattle, with small
fields surrounded by neat stone walls. The island is also much less developed
than the other Balearic Islands, which adds to its charm. Birds here appear to
be more confiding, perhaps because there is less shooting here. Certainly the
raptors are abundant, and we find Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, and Booted Eagle.

Walking Holidays in
The delightful Balearic Island of Menorca could have been
made for walking holidays. As a largely undiscovered island, it has retained a
charm and beauty that many parts of mainland Spain have long since forgotten.
On Menorca there are literally hundreds of small hidden
coves, many accessible only on foot, with backdrops normally consisting of lush
green hills or lightly scented pine forests. Many visitors to the island
describe the scenery as being similar to Cornwall or Devon in the summer. Close
to Casa KaySha is Cala Pregonda which is a peaceful
bay backed by pine and tamarisk woods – a lovely and sheltered part of Menorca’s north coast
Menorca is also rich in history, with evidence of Talaylotic, Roman, Muslim, French and English occupations
waiting to be discovered. Ferreries which is Menorca’s highest town is a good starting point for walks
to view the spectacular limestone gorges.
Because of its climate and landscape, Menorca forms part of
the bird migration south. This, along with a number of endemic species, also
makes Menorca a bird watchers paradise at certain times of year. The terrain is
a combination of cliff top passages, pine forest pathways, country lanes and
deserted golden beaches.
During the Mediterranean winter, the already beautiful island
of Menorca, turns a lush green and is a haven for a multitude of flowers and a
whole range of wildlife. At this time of year, the usually quiet beaches are
totally deserted. However whilst the winter weather in Menorca is far kinder
than that of the UK, you may wish to
bring some lightweight winter walking clothing, such as waterproof jackets and
leggings
After each days walking why not finish off the day at a
different local restaurant!!

Golf Son Parc
Menorca
Golf Son Parc is a championship
quality course, ideal for beginners and experienced golfers alike. The course is
both challenging and picturesque. It is located a few minutes walk from “Casa KaySha” and is itself just a few
hundred metres from the award winning Son Parc beach
on the north coast of Menorca . Around the course are wooded hills and a
protected wet zone with a rich variety of bird life. In the distance are views
of Monte Torro, Menorca’s
highest point.
Great care has been taken in developing the course
sympathetically with the environment by leaving natural features such as rocks
and planting with native flora. The course’s irrigation requirements are fully
met from rainwater and from treated water – they do not take a single drop of
fresh water (either from the mains or from wells) for the course. A very
special feature of Golf Son Parc Menorca is a flock
of peacocks that live just behind the third green. They are always happy to
share their home with golf and we hope they add an extra touch of colour to
your round
The Son Parc driving range
The course was originally 9 holes and has recently been
extended to 18 with the last four holes opening in summer 2006. All the new
holes have been designed by Dave Thomas Golf Ltd. Dave is the ex Ryder
Cup player and designer of many top courses worldwide, including The Belfry
courses & San Roque on the Costa del Sol.
DT Golf has also designed a programme of improvements for the original 9
holes which has brought all 18 holes to the same level of design.
The course is open 365 days per year and visitors are always welcome with daily green fees available. Clubs, trolleys and buggies are available for hire. Full details of the club can be found on the web site.

The Fiestas
Throughout all of Spain and the
Balearic Islands there has always been a strong association with the annual
cycle of local fiestas. The traditions of the Menorcan
fiesta are possibly the strongest of all, with many tracing their origins way
back to the 14th Century. To the local residents, the word fiesta conjures up
images of beautifully groomed horses, and the drink “Pomada”
which is a combination of gin and lemon. Enjoy both whilst at Casa KaySha. A typical fiesta begins in
the afternoon before the Saint's day with the horses and their riders meeting
and parading through the streets before congregating at the church for Mass. In
the evening there is often live music and traditional folk dancing, and then a
magnificent firework display ends the celebrations at around midnight.
Dancing
Horses at Es Castell Fiesta in July
Horses have always played a central part
in the fiestas and traditions of Menorca. The pure bred Menorcan
horse is recognised and valued, throughout the world
as a strong, slender and elegant breed that is famous for its ability to rear
up onto its hind legs. The Menorcan Horse Fair is
held in Es Mercadal during the first Sunday of May
each year, where the very best horses on Menorca are judged by a panel of
experts from the Menorcan Breeders Association, which
is then followed by displays of riding skills

Recommended whilst at Casa KaySha
Only 20 minutes drive from the apartment is the harbour at Mao
(Mahon). Parking is easy and a walk along the harbour front is a must. A boat
trip around the world’s second deepest natural harbour or further around the Menorcan coast should not be missed. There are great
views of the cliff top houses and full descriptions of the areas fascinating
history. Whilst in town why not call into the fish market for fresh fish for
the barbeque.
Also check out the
A visit to the old capital at Ciutadella
will be unforgettable. It’s about 35 minutes drive from the apartment and a
wonderful place to visit. Whilst there take a carajillo
(coffee with brandy) and a selection of tapas in the Cercle Artistic coffee house or one of the open-air café’s
adjacent to the Placa des Born which is one of the
finest city squares in Spain. Also wander the back streets where every other
house is the palace of a noble family. There are excellent restaurants for a
fine night out.
Ciutadella harbour
Explore the island’s prehistory – the talaiots,
taules and navetes (boat-shaped,
Bronze Age burial chambers). The Naveta des Tudons, close to Ciutadella is
the best preserved of the navetas.
Try to catch a fiesta during your stay at “Casa KaySha”. These are Christian based
and spiced with pagan ritual and a passion for horses. Jousting can be seen at
the Festa de Saint Joan in Ciutadella
in June; giants, gin and dancing horses in Es Castell
in July and again at Mao in September. The Fiestas are very exciting and
excellent for capturing on video and still pictures to show family and
friends.
Es Castell Fiesta in July
Splash out on calderetta de Longosta at the charming fishing village of Fornells. This famous – but pricey thick lobster casserole
a favourite of King Juan Carlos of Spain is a mere 10 minutes drive from the
apartment. A cheaper but nearly as nice alternative is calderetta
de mariscos or calderetta
de peix with fish or seafood instead of lobster. Also
a great place for sailing and wind surfing
Fornells
For great views around the coast of Menorca take a short
trip (about 15 minutes) up Monte Torro. This is the
spiritual and physical high point of Menorca – a hilltop convent right at the
centre of the island. Monte Torro is the highest
point in Menorca at 358m above sea level. It offers great views in all
directions from the terrace and car park.
A visit to Cala Pregonda is well worth the effort. Everyone has their own
favourite Menorcan cove but they all have one thing
in common – you can’t reach them by road. This is one of the best and only
about 20 minutes from the apartment – up to the start of the walk! An old Roman
road runs from Santa Agueda but the easiest approach
is from Binimel – la. Take the steps over the west end
of the beach and follow the track. Take a picnic, plenty of water and enjoy the
crystal clear sea. Try a night out at the trotting races in Mao or Ciutadella at weekends. Its inexpensive and a really fun
night out. If at the Hippodrome at Mahon then you should certainly drop into St
Luis where there are excellent local
restaurants like la Reuada for Tapas.

A visit to the harbour at Cala Font
is also recommended. Combine this with a walk around Es Castell.
At Cala Font there are an abundance of excellent and
well priced restaurants most with excellent views over the harbour. On the way
back detour around Mahon port and enjoy the sights and sounds of the vibrant
capital.

Some fine views around the island
Finally cool off at the Aqua Park at Cala
en Bosch which is about 45 minutes drive away. If you have a late flight on
your last day at Casa KaySha this could
be where you spend your last hours of the holiday soaking up the sun whiles the
children use up their remaining energy. As you can see there is much to do
during your stay at Casa KaySha

Places to visit (Approximate drive time
from Casa KaySha)
Fornells (10 Minutes)

Fornells is an attractive fishing village very close to Casa KaySha. It features a beautiful bay
fringed by low whitewashed houses. King Juan Carlos of Spain is a regular
visitor and is believed to enjoy the local delicacy calderetta
de Longosta. There is a superb range of restaurants
and the fish is genuinely local and fresh.
Arenal d'en Castell (10 Minutes)
The bay at Arenal d'en Castell is a near perfect
horse shoe, and is often pictured on the front covers of the major tour
operators summer sun brochures. The warm shallow waters of the bay make this
resort very popular with families with young children. The beach is without
doubt a major attraction of this resort with fine, clean sand and a good
variety of water sports and other facilities available to suit all tastes.
Ciutadella (35 Minutes)
Where Mao is Bureaucratic, Ciutadella
is Artistic and has style. When the capital was moved by the British to Mao the
nobility and the church stayed in Ciutadella. It
remains today a pure Catalan City. There are excellent open air cafes adjacent
to the Placa des Born which is one of the finest city
squares in Spain. Also wander the back streets fanning out from the cathedral
where every other house is the palace of a noble family. The harbour also
boasts wonderful restaurants for dinning at the waters edge. An excellent place
to wander in the evening for souvenirs and people watching.
Es Grau (20 Minutes)
Es Grau is a small fishing
village with picturesque little white houses, fishing boats in the harbour and
a horseshoe shaped bay and its shallow waters are perfect for children. Boat
trips are available from here to Illa d'en Colom - island of pigeons,
which is the largest offshore island on Menorca and features a couple of
beaches and some Roman ruins. Es Grau has a few
restaurants and bars that can get quite busy during the summer months - mainly
due to the locals from Mao
Mao – Mahon (20
minutes)
Mahon (Spelt Mao locally) is the capital of Menorca.
Mayonnaise (Mahon-aise) was created here during the
French occupation. Mahon is the second largest natural harbour after Pearl
Harbour and was an important strategic harbour for the various navies that
occupied it. Along the harbour side are lots of restaurants and cafe bars.
There are plenty of
shops in Mahon and there is an open air market on Tuesdays. There is a nice walk
from the harbour, although it is quite steep. It winds up from where the cruise
ships dock, through the main street to the open air market at the end and past
the fish market. A walk along the harbour front admiring the yachts of the
wealthy should not be missed.
Mao has been the capital of Menorca, since the British
moved it from Ciutadella in 1721. The reason being
the harbour at 5 km long, over 1 km at Its widest point, and 15-30m deep it is
one of the largest natural harbour in the world, this coupled with Its location
in the Mediterranean, has made lt a strategic
stronghold for many nations throughout history.
The port itself is relaxing by day & buzzing by night.
The bars and restaurants along the portside come alive at night it is easy to
spend many hours down in the port, watching the ships, admiring the view,
enjoying the hospitality of the restaurants, or just sat taking in the
atmosphere. The town itself has plenty to offer. Most of the shopping is along
pedestrian streets with wonderful cake shops, swish boutiques, leather, pottery
& fresh fish and food in the markets. With Narrow streets to explore,
pleasant shady squares with welcoming pavements cafe's & shopping that
range's from the twice weekly market to the expensive designer boutiques. Mao
is a must on every visit to Menorca.

Es Castell (25 Minutes)
Es Castell, has plenty to offer
its visitors, with shopping, restaurants and nightlife. There are market days twice
a week, and the Fiesta de San Jaume, at the end of
July. most of the bars and restaurants are situated around the two coves, Calas Fons. and Calas Corb, It is said that cala Corb is so named because the
bodies of the escapees from the quarantine island in the harbour were sometimes
washed up here. Calas Fons
Is the main place to head for, it has something to suit all pockets and all
tastes
Addaya (10 minutes)
Addaya is a romantic fishing village which boasts a beautiful marina,
with a few restaurants and bars. The area is renowned for its beauty, beaches,
scuba-diving, bird watching and walking. Arenal d'en Castell, the main resort is
only 5 minutes away by car. There you will find the attractive sandy beach and
other tourist attractions.
Alayor (10 Minutes)
Alayor is the third largest town on the island. it is a very
charming town with narrow winding streets and white washed houses which conjure
up images of Medieval times. Alaior houses a tempting
range of stores selling jewellery, pottery, wood, gifts and - of course -
shoes. This is an important industry in the town, and you will find some great
bargains, especially in the factory shops on the outskirts. This is also a good
place to look for locally produced Mahon cheese. And don’t miss the town’s
colourful markets - craft on Saturdays and local produce on Thursdays
Cala Galdana (25 minutes)
The resort of Cala Galdana lies on the south coast of
Son Bou ( 20 minutes)
Son Bou is on the south coast of
Menorca. The first time you set your eyes on the blue sea and gorgeous beach it
will take you breath away. It is lovely. Son Bou has
the longest beach on the island with almost 2 miles of fine white sand backed
in the most part by a protected area of sand dunes and freshwater marshes. The
resort has a few basic tourist shops along with a range of restaurants.
The Rest….
Cala d’algaiarens – A pair of
beautiful beaches on the remote north west of Menorca. Reached by a drive
across private land this is a peaceful location making no concessions to
tourism.
Binibeca Vell – An artful copy of a small
Mediterranean village with whitewashed houses, orange trees and sun drenched
patios.
Cala Macarella – One of the most
perfect spots on Menorca’s coast. Well worth the
walk.
Cala Pregonda – A peaceful bay,
backed by pine and tamarisk woods, in a remote and sheltered corner of the
north coast.
Ferreries – Menorca’s highest town is an
excellent starting point for a walk to view the spectacular limestone gorges.
